Addition of small amounts of graphene oxide in the polyol during the synthesis of waterborne polyurethane urea adhesives for improving their adhesion properties

Abstract Mixtures of polyadipate 1,4-butanediol polyol and different small amounts (0.01–0.10 wt%) graphene oxide (GO) were added during the synthesis waterborne polyurethane urea dispersions (PUDs) carried out with acetone method. The addition 0.02–0.04 wt% GO increased T-peel strength plasticized poly (vinyl chloride)/PUD/plasticized chloride) joints whereas 0.05–0.10 wt% single lap-shear stainless steel/PUD/stainless steel joints. improved adhesion PUDs containing was ascribed to creation covalent interactions between surface groups on NCO isocyanate prepolymer formation, creating new urethane groups; phase inversion, covalently bonded sheets embedded chains inside PUD particles, this changed degree separation hard soft segments. When more than 0.04 wt% added, some particles cannot be but they agglomerated physically “trapped” chains. As a consequence, properties PU + GO films in PU 0.01–0.04 wt% ones GO.
